| GR Elite | Your First Contact with Greek Culture/Music Hi everyone I have been so so busy these past weeks and will be in the coming weeks. Just drop by to see how everyone is doing. OK, I open this thread because I am interested to hear from non-Greek members how and when they first discovered Greek culture and/or Greek music. My very first contact with Greek culture is when I saw the movie Zorba the Greek when I was a young kid. I did not remember much of it except for the last scene of the beach. Of course, since then, I have watched it again many times and read the book once. I also studied Greek civilization in Grade 8 History class. I first heard Greek music when I worked in Man and His World, back in 1976, when we had the Olympic Games in Montreal. Man and His World used to be an Exposition where they had different pavilions, one devoted to a selected participating country. I liked the Greek pavilion the most. They had a copy of the green statue of Zeus or Posidon and it was awesome to see it. There was a Greek band with a very good singer and dancers from Greece. It was the first time I heard and saw bouzouki playing. I was hooked right then and there to Greek music. Maybe it would sound strange to the Greek members but Greek culture and music have been a part of my life since. (No, don't count how many years, it is a very long time ago. | GR Elite | Re: Your First Contact with Greek Culture/Music Just to add that I saw Zorba and learned about Greek civilization back when I was in my native country (South-Vietnam). I would never have thought that Greek culture would have such a great effect on my life later on. Life reserves for us such nice surprises and mysteries sometimes. So what were your experiences, would you like to share them with us? To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 1 or greater. You currently have 0 posts. |

| GR Elite | Re: Your First Contact with Greek Culture/Music Oh, sea-gr, I thought you were Greek. I have not watched so many movies myself. One I liked was Electra, a drama. Very good movie. Female, how is Corfu? I have not visited there yet. A nice thing I liked to do in Greece was listening to Greek music too, and there was plenty to listen to on the radio, not like the radio we have here, there is nothing good on it. Well, at least for me, since I am not into the new music. |

| GR Elite | Re: Your First Contact with Greek Culture/Music Oh, and yes, I have to add that what struck me the most in Greece was the people's hospitality. People were talking to me - in Greek To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 1 or greater. You currently have 0 posts. and asking questions. I have never met people that curious. I was surprised how they were interested in learning about other cultures and countries, considering that they must be used to seeing so many foreigners around. |
