I would expect Greeks from the diaspora to be more tolorent on this issue, but still will raise eyebrows within their family as it would for native Greeks.
Or am i wrong??

However, I have noticed a reticence from Greeks to marry with non-Greeks from the topic "Greeks in North America". I did not realize this taboo stuff, a little shocking to learn I must say.
I could understand if it were a religious reason like the Jews, for example, who require that people convert to their faith when they get married (I think).
All that being said, gee, we are in 2007 (and I won't say the rest of the expression of another topic). To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 1 or greater. You currently have 0 posts. |

Behelit, why is it so important to keep the blood line pure, for this is what it boils down to? I think I read somewhere, maybe in "Genes, ...." about the purity of the Greek race if I remember well, and I was struck by that.
I hope you or someone else will be able to answer honestly because I am curious. |

But i have no problems with greek mixing with other Indo-Eurpeans but it would be better with Armenian or Serbian for exemple | To think that Greek or any ethnic group is of pure pedegree of some type is purely nonesence. There are no pure bloodlines, even from ancient Greeks - Myceneans, Dorians, Minoneons, etc were all different tribal groups. What binded them in the end and made them Hellenes was their pagan belief system of the same gods - Spartans, Macedonians, Athenians, Thracians, etc. And much is true today. Put it this way, if you met an ethnic Greek who was a Johavahs Witness and then you met a Lebanese Orthodox person - who could you relate and bond with more closely?
Pure Bloodlines is nationalistic and non existant - especially the Greeks, one of the oldest ethnic groups that has been around for a couple of milleniums -just absurd.
What bonds us is our culture and beliefs, and even Greeks, celebrate and do things differently depending on what region you are from eg. wedding rituals.
Going back to to the topic, i raised this because many of my friends have married non-Greeks, and are very happy indeed. Most have married Italians, and i'm sick of attending 2 church services per wedding  (i have another one this January), but obviously, as they say - Love Conquors All.
Issues of religion & child naming are always the thorny issues in these relationships, and are usually discussed prior to tieing the knot. And these pressures usually come from the families of your own and the one your about to inherit. The most sensable parents are just happy that their child is happy and they can both support each other, but there are parents who still think they are living in the village. |

Myceneans, Dorians, Minoans, Spartans, Macedonians, Athenians, Thracians are all Hellenes.
I would only marry a pure European Christian Women.
