And if those fares aren't bad enough, you have the Euro to deal with. Right now the American dollar is only .64 Euro. You lose 1/3 of your money in conversion.

Wow thats a lot of money...I go in july. I pay for 4 persons, 3 weeks including appartment € 2300. Sometimes pakkages are cheaper than just plane tickets...

Then there's car hire in Greece (and the hire car companies are not very professional) When we hired a car in 2006, the van we got was dirty the windscreen wipers didnt work (and ofcourse it rained ) and the repair centre we were told to go to were hopeless and not huge on customer service .

Add to that Hotel cost (coz we dont depend on relatives :P ) and all the other co$ts and its quite an expensive trip . We budgeted for $1000 AUS per day last time . That covered everything for 4 people per day (accomodation/car/ food/spending money ) and any unexpected extras . :o

Plus you have to buy gifts if you have family and friends in Greece and buy gifts when you come back for family and friends home.

I inquired about purchasing 5 tickets for Greece. The price was 1800 round trip multiplied by 5!! Also dont forget about money for spending. Basically I need about 10,000 dollars to go to Greece with the family. I definately cant do that especially now.

1800 with what company? I am not an expert on the issue but from what I know a ticket with the Olympic airways (go and return) costs about 800 euros.

I agree with Hellenika...The weak dollar is making it difficult for those who live in the States to enjoy themselves... during my younger days, I would bring about $1000 and it would last me for the entire summer... now $1000 will only last me a few days.

That Euro needs to drop down....or bring back Draxmes

Thats never going to happen with the Euro. If anything the American dollar needs to start climbing back up but I dont think it will ever have more value than the Euro.

My personal opinion is that the dollar will rise when the government of the USA changes, but this will be temporary. The American economy has not the supplies to erect again their economy in the long run, that's why the rise will probably be temporary and then the drop will start again till the final economical collapse of the USA which is not very far.

The American economy wont collapse anytime soon. Too many foriegn countries have millions invested in America if America collapses so will they. What America is going through now is temporary. Its only time until America gets back to full power. Its true what they say every empire falls but I dont think this is true for America anytime soon.
