| GR Member | Greeks in Texas To me, Greeks in Northern Texas are wishy-washy. I am from Chicago where we were GREEK!!! and damn proud of it. The ones that are native in Northern Texas are what we would call "bremena psomia"....they don't seem to take much pride in being Greek and know so little of what it means to be Greek. They fully expected Greece to flub everything when we hosted the Olympics....and had nothing good to say about any of the Opening Ceremony.....mind you, what was shown was completely unknown to them. I thank God that my mother and father took the time to instill in us a sense of history, pride, and knowledge of the Greek language (written as well as spoken). Even when we lived in Colorado and Missouri and were the only Greeks around, my parents would pile us kids in the back of the car (with no A/C and only an AM radio) and would drive up to 3 hours (one way)to attend Greek events.... (2 hours[one way] to go to church at times--talk about a killer Holy Week!). We were brought up with "whatever you do reflects on your family and on all of Greeks..." The Greeks in N. Texas do not have any of that, and would not even think of making those sacrifices. They even went so far as to DEMAND the Greek flag be taken down at one of the Greek Orthodox Churches here.....it caused quite a debate....one of the priests at that church stated that his goal was to remove all things Greek from that church....and he said it to my husband--a Greek! I have heard one couple state that their daughter could marry a Greek as long as his parents were not fresh from Greece (!)...she married a "white" (what those of us who ARE Greek call them) and they were so happy she did not marry one whose parents were right from Greece....go figure. I miss the Greeks from the Northern States (especially Chicago), but my job keeps me here.... |

| GR Elite | Re: Greeks in Texas I've travelled to Texas numerous times and I have to say i don't think i've ever come across a single Greek... I was even surprised to see the title in this thread! I'm not surprised the church doesn't fly the flag, they only fly the Texas flag down there. I was visiting a company in Austin and they told me one time they accidently flew the Texas flag upside down and several angry locals pulled over to complain in the time they went to fix it!!!!

| GR Member | Re: Greeks in Texas I wish I were "shitting" you....these are the whitest Greeks here (in N Texas)...now Houston, from what I hear is different...especially down by the docks....the Athens bar and grill really rocks.... The WG (White Greeks) are really surprised at me and I have often gotten into "wars of words" with them..... As for the Texas flag...Texas is a whole other country and has some good folks in it (once you get away from the bubbas), but the Greeks here are drips. |

| GR Elite | Re: Greeks in Texas I am sorry to hear that! On the other hand once I show the best license plate ever. It was on an older, 1978-1980 Corvette and read TUKFXS…….and I agree 100%! xaxaxaxa |

| GR Elite | Re: Greeks in Texas I feel Austin is the most "international" of the Texas cities (at least compared to Houston, San Antonion, El Paso) Haven't explored Dallas yet but overall I think at first Texans don't really like anybody not from Texas but after you befriend a few you'll find they are some of the nicest people in the US. But the funny thing for me is that after living most of my life in Canada the thing that's always on my mind when i'm down there is air conditioning. Even days when the locals find it freezing it felt like a broiler oven to me! To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 1 or greater. You currently have 0 posts.

| GR Member | Re: Greeks in Texas I would not know about "the most beautiful women in the USA" thing...... For me the state is too hot.....we have our AC on just about all year (then again my hubby and I are both "Yankees"), even at my place of work I have it very "cold" Some of the people here in this state are good folks....they still tip hats at ladies and hold doors open for us....once when my car was stuck on the side of the road there were many Southern gentlemen who could not do enough for me....it's just those WG's..... |
