Jason Magder, The Gazette
Published: Tuesday, March 25
Take your pick: "Greek town" or "Quartier Hellenic."
Either name could soon be used to identify a two-kilometre stretch of Park Avenue.
The area's merchants association expects the city will recognize and market the neighbourhood's Greek roots, making it similar to Little Italy or Chinatown.
Font:****Montreal Mayor Gérald Tremblay said in October 2006 the city would study the idea of rebranding the section of Park Ave., from Mount Royal Ave. to Van Horne Ave.
However, the merchants were told by the city to expect an announcement this week, to coincide with today's Greek Independence Day celebrations and the community's annual parade, set for Sunday.
Plateau Mont Royal borough mayor refused to return repeated calls on the issue today. Her spokesperson, Bernard Larin said the matter was still under discussion.
"We know they're going to announce something, but we're not privy to the details," said Kosta Voggas, president of the Park Avenue Merchants Association.
He added the branding study yielded positive results.
"It showed it would help business in the area if the Greek identity was promoted," he said. "Park Avenue is still multicultural, but this would enable us to use the predominant Greek presence to attract more business."
The merchants have asked for some changes to the street, namely to move the reserved lane dedicated for buses into the middle of the street, so cars can park during rush hour.
"We want to slow down traffic," Voggas said. "We don't want it to be an inner-city highway."
He added if the plan goes through, the Greek community would move the route of the annual parade to Park Ave. To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 1 or greater. You currently have 0 posts.

The Montreal greektown is really popular with American tourists. Some Americans I know who went to F1 in the past liked the Greek restaurants not just because they were good but the staff tended to be less "snootty" to them compared to the regular French ones To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 1 or greater. Hey Angelo, where is the growth coming from off hand? Is it new arrivals from Hellas, is it growth from locals having kids or is it Greeks from other parts of Montreal (or other disporia cities) moving there?

I thought for example that in California there were about 150,000 Greeks state wide but more recently I think I read that the number in 2005 was 125,000. And my final question is, when they leave especially from the Australia and American continents do they return to Greece or Europe in general? |

The numbers were broght up as they were comparing skop numbers to Greek numbers. The skops were telling the government there are only 230K Greeks while heavily inflating their own numbers.

For example I know of many older Greeks who are retiring back to Greece. The Canadian born Greek families have a negative growth rate like the vast majority of Euro-Canadians. Less offspring than the people they are replacing.
