With the Participation of Expatriate Greeks

A conference on migration was held in Chania with the participation of Greek immigrants, who had distinguished abroad as government officials, scientists and in other posts as well. The first conference took place in Samos in 2006. The above conferences aim at helping Greece utilizing conference experience in hammering out its policy on migration.

Utilisation of Expatriate Greeks? Experience

The Migration Policy Institute organized the conference in cooperation with the World Inter-Parliamentary Association of Hellenism. One of the speakers, Maria Bountrogianni, Ontario's Minister of Immigration and Citizenship referred to the prospects of immigrants' integration in Canada. She said that in Canada four out of five immigrants become soon civilians, feel at home in Canada and work as if they are in their own country. Other speakers stressed that it is wrong to isolate socially minorities, adding that each country's mentality, as well as its political, economic and social system affect the immigrants? integration course.

Special reference was made to expatriate Greeks, who can offer a lot to Greece.

Δε νομίζω ότι κάτι τέτοιο είναι εφικτό έτσι όπως είναι τα πραγματά.

Ας πάρουμε για παράδειγμα τις ΗΠΑ όπου υπάρχουν 4 εκατομμύρια άνθρωποι Ελληνικής καταγωγής. Από αυτούς μόνο 1 με 1,5 εκατομμύριο αισθάνονται Έλληνες και αναγνωρίζουν την καταγωγή τους. Αυτοί που μιλούν Ελληνικά και κρατούν ένθερμα όλα τα έθιμα δεν είναι περισσότεροι από 500.000. Από αυτούς πόσοι θα αποφάσιζαν να έρθουν στην Ελλάδα;

Το ξέρω ότι ήδη κάποιοι από αυτούς επαναπατρίζονται, αλλά είναι μειοψηφία και νομίζω θα παραμείνουνε. Εκτός αν αλλάξουν δραματικά τα πράγματα. Προς το παρόν αυτοί που επαναπατρίζονται δεν είναι αρκετοί για να αλλάξουν κάτι στο δημογραφικό της Ελλάδας.
