![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Life in Astoria Queens Being that I was born and raised in Astoria Queens NY Ive been around my kind all the time. I went to Greek American school , always hung out with mostly Greeks and till this day enjoy going out for a frape in my favorite cafe which is Avenue cafe. That is probably the only cafe left where you find decent Greeks and Cypriots. To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 1 or greater. You currently have 0 posts. Avenue Cafe As a child I was raised in a typical Greek family. I went to church, went to the Greek parades, to the Greek xorosperides ect. I was raised to be proud of my heritage people and who I am. Which I still am. I was also taught about Turks and what they did to our people throughout evil. I can still remember my grandmother bad talking Turks clearly. Astoria was filled with Greeks and many Italians everywere you went. From Ditmars, 30th ave to Broadway and 36 avenue everything was predominately Greek. Greek churches filled Astoria and they still do. During Easter from Friday to Saturday the streets were filled religious Greeks attending church , that used to be my favorite time of year still is now. All the stores were Greek owned so everywhere you went you would see Greeks. We even had a Greek movie theater in Ditmars although that was closed down many years ago. St Irenes Chrysolovandou in Astoria To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 1 or greater. You currently have 0 posts. Growing up I can tell you I used to get together with Greek friends and we used to go around creating chaos. We used to beat up Indians, Arabs fight with Blacks and Puerto Ricans. Yeah we used to call our selves tough guys lol. Some youthful ways never change do they? lol To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 1 or greater. You currently have 0 posts. When Greece won the 2004 Eurocup One thing that I have noticed is how the Greek youth are presently. One thing Ive noticed many of the youth tend to like to associate themselves as a gangster type. Basically what we call here wiggers derived from the word black which is used between blacks to greet eachother or used as a racial term. Anyways many of the Greek youth have no sense of direction. One they act like what we call gangsters. They were their pants down to their ankles , they speak like filthy parasites and a lot of them are hooked on drugs from marijuanna and some even into harder drugs. Most of them do not go to church. They have no sense of Greek pride except the day of the Greek parade they drive around the streets with Greek flags shirts which is a good thing but also gets on my nerves because the day after its back to the same all filth. Its a shame and its real disgusting to have to witness that kind of filth from my own people. However their are also proud Greeks that gives me some hope. Youth that have not forgotten where they are from and dont associate themselves with that kind of filth. Astoria has changed much especially in the past 10 years. Not too many Greeks left as compared to the 80's. Now you have large populations of Mexicans, Albanians, some Turks, many Arabs, Indians and Pakistanis. Its really disgusting if you ask me. I even saw a car with a FYROM sticker ( obviously I pulled it right off nobody was around). The Albanians here made themselves a name very quickly with the crimes they have been commiting. Especially in Bronx NY were their a huge population of them nobody dares to approach that neighborhood. They are known as savages. We also have many yuppies. Yuppies are those of pretty much rich WASPS who moved from NYC to Astoria because of the prices of rent. Unfortunately because of them it has become real hard to live in Astoria now the rents have gone sky high. Also we have good some good people left their, Serbians, Romanians, Russians and some Polish. Also a decent amount of Italians remain. Oh yes we also have blacks and puerto ricans which are usually the biggest cause of crime but compared to other parts of NYC they are not that bad. Anyways thats Astoria Queens one of Americas largest Greek community atleast it used to. |

| GR Untouchable | Re: Life in Astoria Queens It's depressing, because in our lifetimes which seem to average around 3 decades on here, we have seen our neighborhoods, cities, quality of life and just about everything else trashed. We shouldn't have to look back on things like I'm 80 yrs old saying, in my day... I used to go to my yiayias in Astoria every summer when I was a child. I remember only Greeks. She would take me to Steinway St for when she was shopping and she couldn't walk a few feet without stopping to talk to other Greeks she knew. I have not been in Astoria since I was a teenager, but I looked it up online and saw a bunch of nasty marts and stores for the vermin populace. Prokomenos, I am sure you know the park in Astoria right? Well yiayias apt building was not too far from there. So the park was nice. I can only imagine what kind of filth has infested it now.

Since you're a heavy reader, this is a great subject. Heres a book you'll find very informative its called: The Slaughter of Cities: Urban Renewal as Ethnic Cleansing by E. Michael Jones. | |

| GR Untouchable | Re: Life in Astoria Queens Thanks Megale I will look at it. The thing is, I try to avoid somethings sometimes because I tend to get easily infuriated. Like the whole ottomon empire thing. I have read snippets and parts of it. Then I cant read anymore because I get livid. I go back to it after a while and the same thing happens over again. I need anger management classes and "cultural" sensitivity training. LOL I like my race, so I am insensitive you know. All I can say is God help us.

| GR Elite | Re: Life in Astoria Queens Yeah I had similar experiences in Canada until around high school were the Greek events (church, horos, parades) started to become more and more infrequent. Also, ost of the Canadian born Greeks who have families leave teh cities to get away from the newer 3rd world immigrants. That's why I was happy to hear when Angelo mentioned the Montreal one was growing! I like the part about your yiayia: Quote:

| GR Rookie | Re: Life in Astoria Queens Very sad to hear and see how things have become in Astoria. I live in New Jersey and you know what Prokomenos...... No matter what Astoria is the closest place to me that makes me feel, even for a little bit, that I am back home in Greece. |
