Strong quake rocks Southwest Greece

A magnitude 6.5 earthquake has rocked southern Greece, collapsing buildings and causing panic among villages in the Peloponnese region.

The tremor struck near the city of Patras and was felt as far away as the capital Athens.

There have been no reports of injuries from the quake, which had an epicentre 200 kilometres (124 miles) west of Athens, Greek authorities said.

Greece is one of the world's most earthquake-prone countries.

Here in West Athens it wasn't so strong, but it had duration. For about 15-20 seconds I was feeling like floating on water, and all the lights were moving. It was less strong here that the small Parnitha earthquake that happened 2 days ago but it had much more duration.

I got call from my village in Arcadia and they felt it stronger there. Post-earthquakes already took place and more are expected.

2 deaths and 37 injuries reported so far. It is estimated that about 50 buildings collapsed, and the authorities are taking out people. Let's all hope the number will stop here.

Τώρα ο Γιωργάκης ο Παπανδρέου ετοιμάζει τον λόγο που θά βγάλει και θά κατηγορεί πάλι την κυβέρνηση ως υπεύθυνη που δέν πρόβλεψε το σεισμό και πολύ περισσότερο που του εδώθη άδεια να περάσει τα συνορα μας αφού ήταν 6.5 R.

Θα έχει στείλει ως συνήθως και τα λαγωνικά του κόμματος επι τόπου για να συγκεντρώσουν χρήσιμα στοιχεία.

Αποκλείεται να μη χρησιμοποιήσει ενα τέτοιο σεισμό για πολιτκό του όφελος.

Είμαι περίεργος να δω με τι είδους βλακείες θα υποβιβάσει πάλι ολόκληρο το ΠΑΣΟΚ αλλά και τον εαυτό του.

Οι Τούρκοι, που είναι και "Τούρκοι" έστειλαν τουλάχιστον βοήθεια.

Αυτός ο άνθρωπος τι είδους Έλληνας είναι τέλος πάντων ?

Typical exaggeration of the media. The earthquake was severe but obviously it wasn't the most severe earthquake of the modern times, nor in magnitude nor in casulaties and damage. The thing is at the big earthquakes of the last few years they were no human losses. Fortunately the toll did not grow since yesterday, just the injuries are growing.

I feel like Asterix and the other villagers. I fear only the falling sky ( roof ).
Quake makes you feel minor, a trick of god to make humans humble.

I know how you feel. Once, many years ago, I was inside a building and I felt the floor under me move. It was just a tiny tremor, but enough to make me feel totally helpless. I can only imagine what you and Ellinas felt, and what the people in the quake areas must be feeling.

I think all big natural events make one feel microcospic. But then maybe we are microcospic to start with, we only imagine that we are great.
