Protests in Greece against pension reforms

Workers continue to fight for their pensions in Greece
tags: Greece health and medicine refuse collection general strikes pensions strikes March 17th, 2008 by Alex...
Walkouts by public sector workers against the pension reform bill are continuing, with a 24-hour general strike expected on Wednesday.

Last Wednesday saw a three-hour general stoppage called by the General Confederation of Workers of Greece (GSEE), during which doctors, engineers, pharmacists and lawyers joined bank workers and rubbish collectors already on strike. The day ended with a march on parliament attended by hundreds of workers.

Rubbish has begun to pile up on city streets as collectors continue their week-long strike. Clashes with police occurred in Athens on Wednesday as workers tried to prevent rubbish being deposited at a landfill site.

Bank workers have voted to carry on their strike, and workers at the Public Power Corporation will continue their walkout through to the general strike this Wednesday, which has been called by the main unions to coincide with deliberations on the pension bill in parliament. Staggered 24-hour walkouts by electrical workers have led to intermittent blackouts in many cities.

Hospital workers and engineers will stay on strike through Monday and Tuesday, and lawyers have said they will continue their strike to Friday.

Unions have vowed to escalate strike action until the pension reform bill is scrapped. The bill aims to collect Greece's 170-odd pension schemes into 13 main funds, and will see cuts to benefits, an increase in the retirement age, and loss of benefits for working mothers.

Being part of a union myself the largest construction one Local 3 IBEW in the USA, I support the Greeks who are on strike. How can an individual enjoy life when he or she is retired without a good pension? Especially when they have worked for 30 years paying taxes and so on.

Re: Protests in Greece against pension reforms

This is a very grave and sad development for us. The problem, the serious problem is that A) the fumbling government lacks the tools and means to resolve the situation; B) the incompetent bureacratic non-greek government lacks the necessary means to generate the funds. It is an impasse, and no solution will be found . The parakeets of the opposition will chirp and charp that they have the key to the solution. Lies, lies and more lies. They may have the keys to open the cornucopia of abject corruption which will line their pockets in gold, should they be entrusted with the dead end challenge; they don't have any other keys. The economic situation will grow uglier and more savage. The EU dinosaur is heading for bankruptcy, the satraps in Greece will be running with hands outstretched to the philistines in Brussesl, but to no avail. The Euro might look virile and lusty against the AIDS stricken dollar, but the stronger the Euro gets, the less " transactions" for the sodomites in Brussles. In the meantime our Greek pensioners must bear the brunt and the consequences of 30 years of " leftist, socialists, policies". The party is over and the pensioners, present and future must now foot the bill. Memories of the Olympic and other megalomaniac projects which were undertaken with EU funds are not going to fill groaning bellies nor provide jobs or the "golden tomorrow" that the political brigands keep promissing to our young generation.

In a problem that is and has been serious for almost five decades,

The present administration is anything but fumbling and incompetent, it is very Greek and does not lack neither the tools or the knowledge to resolve a problem that the inactivity of numerous past dead-bit administrations created and certainly feared to acknowledge or touch.

Now the poor opposition can only watch and witness that someone finally has the guts to grab the bull by the horns and do something about it.

They know that the administration is doing the right thing but hell they cannot admit it or they'll be permanently out of work.

So here they are doing what they do best, triggering and escalating strikes using their poor half headed minority union groups that nine out of ten times have no idea what the strike is about.

The economic situation in Greece is the best that we've had in years and as soon as all the proposed and badly needed reforms are passed the necessary funds will be generated, the economy will grow even healthier and many other financial issues will be resolved.

The party is over only for the opposition's political brigands.

This administration is not promising anything at this time, it did so on September 16th of 2007 and it was given the right by the majority of the Greek people to execute those promises that you and many other nonsense babblers like yourself refuse to acknowledge.

You have no idea as to what the problem is but certainly you are entitled to make a fool of yourself.

You don't have an opinion about anything, you jump from one issue to the next with a negative frame of mind just like that last customer in the bar that is about to close.

One last thing that is very confusing and funny at the same time, how can you call the euro strong if like you're stating it generates less transactions?

The way I know it is,

if a currency has no strong buying value within its own country is a sick currency

and if all foreign currencies have difficulty purchasing products from that country that currency (in this case the euro) should be admitted in the ICU.

Make sure brain is in gear before operating keyboard !
I shall return . . .

"Thus spaketh Zarathustra"

A torrent of asinine words, the wise sages take a leaf from the politicos blue book of cliche pharases and aphorisms; pretend to understand every facet of the " problem", or problems . They even have the license to expound their emetic remedies.
