Nicosia welcomes Italy’s assurances

Rome office of breakaway has no status

By Annie Charalambous

The government is satisifed with Italy’s prompt reassurance that it only recognises the Cyprus Republic, after the breakaway regime opened a so-called repesentation office in Rome.

“The Italian governemnt’s statement was very clear, they only recognise the Cyprus Republic,” government spokesman Vassilis Palmas told The Cyprus Weekly yesterday.

“We cannot prevent them (Turkish Cypriots) from opening offices around the world. Thank God, the governments don’t recognise them, so they don’t really have a status.”

But he acknowledged that having ‘TRNC’ offices mushrooming all over was not a positive development.

Italy’s response came in a statement issued in Nicosia on Wednesday after Foreign Minister Erato Kozakou Marcoulis expressed the government’s disconent in a letter sent to her Italian counterpart Massimo D’Alema.

“The Embassy of Italy declares that the Turkish Cypriot office which opened in Rome on December 18, 2007 is a commercial company with a private status only registered at the Rome Chamber of Commerce as limited company, and therefore has absolutely no repesentation power.”

“In this context, the Embassy of Italy reminds that the government of Italy recognises, as all member states of he European Union do, only the Republic of Cyprus,” it added.

Honoured

However, the Turkish Cypriot press went overboard with “celebrations» over the opening by self-declared foreign minister Turgay Avci and Italian MP and “TRNC citizen” Maurizyo Turko of what they insisted on calling a “TRNC representation office” in the presence of distinguished guests.

Avci wrote in the guest book that he felt “honoured and proud to be opening the TRNC Representation in Rome. The acomplishment of opening a representation in Italy of our state, which has been established with the sacrifices and the pain of the Turkish Cypiot people, is a very important step forward.”

He also stressed: “This step symbolizes the struggle of the Turkish Cypriot people to be unified with the international community and take the place it deserves. I fully believe that the Turkish Cypriot people will succeed in this honourable struggle”.

Turko spoke of “an important step” and reiterated the Italian parliament’s support to the Tukish Cypriot people. He also urged them to “continue their struggle”.

While its good news, just the fact that its gotten this far is not a good thing.

This just shows you how completely despicable Turks are. Invading the multi-thousand year old lands of peaceful indigenous people, brutally murdering their inhabitants with their genocidal cold hearted callous methods, then prancing around the world scene like everything they do is legitimate. Truly the worlds most despicable animalist "people".

I was always under the assumption that Italy was a Turkish supporter?

It may have been in the past along with Britain, France and Germay. Hopefully they have changed their ways. The Turks seem to be in every country now spreading their lies, claiming to be the victims.

The only reason those countries in Europe support turkey is because the USA does mostly because of their (turkey) support for Israel. If you go to many European countries like I do and ask average citizens* on the street about turkey, not only do they not want turkey in the EU but they want all turks to leave Europe period. This is especially true in places like Germany with high populations of turks behaving like turks. In Berlin one turk beheaded his wife proudly in an honour killing and displayed her head to Berlin police authorities in a bowling bag. In suburban Frankfort, one turk sodomized a farmers livestock who quickly denied it but foruntunately (or unfortunately depending on your stomach) security cameras captured his turk behaviour.

Re: Nicosia welcomes Italy’s assurances

The Italians have the traditional proclivity of changing horses in mid stream. Lessons from WW1 and WW2. The Italians are only good to strum the strings of a mandolin and eat a plate full of linguini under a setting sun in piazza Navone. Politics and warfare are alien to the Italian psyche.
