Patriarch warns of Arctic eco damage

Ecumenical Patriarch Vartholomeos (Bartholomew) this week warned from Greenland that "time is almost up" for the Arctic Glacier, in an address during the conclusion of the 7th international symposium on the environment, entitled "The Arctic: Mirror of Life".

The Ecumenical Patriarch stressed that if icebergs disappear in Greenland then consequences will be devastating for the entire world, repercussions of biblical proportions, as he said.

The symposium was organised by the Ecumenical Patriarchate.

"Humanity does not have the luxury to argue over economic, racial or religious differences," he added, stressing the need to take immediate action based on cooperation.

Vartholomeos also blessed the Arctic lands and waters in a service held at the southwestern tip of the world's largest non-continent island, at the very site where the first Christian church in the New World was built as early as 1000 AD.
