My Mood: | Athens and Thessaloniki are getting empty August vacationers
August vacationers’ mass exodus to summer resorts continues. All means of transport are 95% booked while high demand for seats is being dealt with the launching of extra routes and flights. Also increased is the traffic on the two national roads, however, without particular problems. According to information from toll stations, 65.000 vehicles passed from Elefsina toll station on Friday and 40.000 vehicles from Shimatari. Exodus of Thessaloniki vacationers also continues smoothly and without particular problems. Since early morning some 7.000 vehicles passed from Malgara toll station while increased but without problems is traffic on the Halkidiki road network. At ports and airports
Sixty-four ships are scheduled to sail from Piraeus port on Saturday and Sunday, transporting tens of thousands of passengers and vehicles to the Aegean islands and Crete while from Rafina port another 24 ships are to set off for the Cyclades islands. According to Rafina Port Authority 6 million people traveled by ship during June and July.
Regarding Athens El. Venizelos airport, 626 flights – of which 41 charter flights- are scheduled to fly today, another 583-10 charter- scheduled to take off on Sunday and 635- 30 charter flights- scheduled to depart on Monday. According to Athens International Airport data aircrafts are nearly 100% boked while the most popular charter flight destinations are Paris, Madrid and Barcelona. Additional services
On the other hand, many vacationers prefer coaches and trains to go to summer resorts. To meet high demand, KTEL (interstate coach service) has launched additional services while OSE ( railway service) has added extra wagons to increase number of seats. Change in weather
In the meantime, the Meteorological Service has forecast change in weather conditions from today with meltemia and notherly winds, which, however, will not create any problems to ship routes as they will not be over 7 Beaufort force in the Aegean. Rain and local storms are forecast in the northern parts of the country today spreading to central Greece on Sunday and Monday and further deterioration of the weather in Macedonia, Epirus and Thessaly.
