PARTHENON MARBLES - PM says getting antiquities back is still a priority for Greece

PM says getting antiquities back is still a priority for Greece

The return of the Parthenon Marbles to Greece from the British Museum is still a “main target” for the government, Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis said on Saturday after viewing a set of recently returned 5th century cups that have been put on display at the Ancient Agora in central Athens. “I am sure that the construction of the New Acropolis Museum, which is now being built at a rapid pace, will provide a new, powerful argument to this effort [to bring back the Marbles],” Karamanlis said. Visitors are likely to be allowed into the museum some time next year.

:realmad: What really bothers the hell out of me about this is how Greece even needs a powerful argument to get back something that is theirs!

Those marbles belong in Greece I dont care if they display them on the streets. It's none of anyone elses business what we do with our history. Those English idiots damaged them as it is. First they were stored for years in some dank shed, then the idiots tried to "clean" them and did damage to them.

Every now and then I email the museum and call them prideless for needing to steal someone elses history. Once I wrote, let my peoples marbles go!

You are right though its ridiculous that they cant get back what rightfully belongs to them. They need to really turn up the heat.

The British pillaged the world to have antiquities like they have in that museum. Without the Parthenon marbles, people will still flock to that musuem anyways. Lots of stolen material in there.

True, but they are going to lose alot more than those marbles. They have no right to any of it. Italy has been trying to get their stuff back too. Eventually their museums will be stripped of anything of value. They can show off their crown jewels. Thats all they have.

Re: PARTHENON MARBLES

Many , many years ago I saw Melina Mercouri (sp?) on “60 Minutes” talking about the “Elgin” marbles. It’s reprehensible that they still haven’t been returned. Shame on the British, but then again…we’re talking about the British.

They like calling them that. As if somehow the thief created them. It's disgraceful and dishonorable that they haven't returned them. And yes, it's the British after all what can we expect.

I've been to that museum and there is an ENTIRE Roman temple in there.
