Re: Prefer the Draxma or Euro?

The truth is that all the prices in Greece have rised since Euro replaced Drachma, we've talked about this and its reasons before I think. Also, it is good to have your own currency as you can control better its production and its allocation.

On the other side though you have others saying that the rise of the prices is not excluively a result of the Euro and they claim that if Greece wouldn't have a strong currency we wouldn't pass the economical crisis that easily and it is something that sounds logical. Also it is a very big service for the citizens that all the EU has the same currency and makes movement in Europe more easy.

So the anwser to this is not simple and personally I haven't managed to conclude in which way it would be better for the country.

Since the Drachma was the oldest name of hte currencies lost due to the Euro. They should of called the Euro the Drachma instead.

Eurozone: FI, ES, IT, CY, GR, PT, FR, IRL, SLO, SK, DE, NL, LU, BE, AT, MT and Andorra, San Marino, Monaco, Montenegro, Vatican, Kosovo.
320 million Europeans in twenty-two countries.

Based in agreements, free trade, solidarity, trust and proximity. I call that a social and political success. And it's here to stay. Every citizen in Europe may have a different feeling but personally I feel Euro my currency. (Even I'm not a German)

The currency exchange rates between founder countries were fixed years before the Euro was born, and so the convergence criteria. That was after many years of hard negotiations. Almost since the first steps of the ECSC (1957). All those countries made their efforts. So, there are no miracles.
I understand the unease of some Britons who see, after they decided not to join it, that the Euro now works by itself.

By the way, it's only a currency.

Re: Prefer the Draxma or Euro?

You wonder why they allow some countries not to use the euro. If it is a union, then every country should follow the same rules.

Re: Prefer the Draxma or Euro?

I think being in the eurozone has helped Greece to get into enormous debt because Greece was riding on the strength of the euro, the public service being the biggest beneficiary of its extravagance. Maybe the problem is not the euro but the public service. 13 pensions down to 3, can anyone imagine that?
