| GR Fanatic | Re: Ancient Greek Army By far the Spartans were the fierced and strongest army ever to live in those times. Their name is still worshipped till this very day. Another reason to be proud of our history. I wonder do you think a full forced Spartan army would of been able to defeat a full forced Roman army? I think the Spartans would be able to beat them. |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Re: Ancient Greek Army I think the Spartans would but I cant really come up with an answer. I am not expert in the military field. The Spartans were superior and skilled soldiers. They would rather die fighting then anything else also they were at their might before the Roman Empire even became an empire. The Roman forces were definately very powerful. A definite advantage to the Romans would probably be their numbers. Like I said though Im not an expert on the subject. |

The Spartans were probably the best-conditioned soldiers of the era, if not of all time. You must remember that the Spartan soldiers were still a citizen army; they were not the professional force Alexander's Macedonians were or Ceasar's legionnaires were. Consequently, they fought fiercer but were less organized than the phalanxes of the others. Even though I'm a Spartan I would have to say that the Romans or Macedonians would probably best them but I can guarantee they would be Pyrrhic victories. And for those ready to jump on me for choosing the Romans, remember Athens won wars over the Spartans because of better generalship as did the Thebans. Leonidas was a valiant, inspirational leader but his greatest accomplishment was Thermopylae; a last stand that required tremendous courage but little strategy (comparatively). | GR Untouchable | Re: Ancient Greek Army It also depends during what era of the military it was in. The Roman military grew stronger with time. In my opinion their victories over Hannibal paved the way to power with them. |

Excellent reference. Historians have spent centuries praising Hannibal and rightly so. However, they forget that the Romans eventually defeated him. Beating a man like Hannibal established a level of skill that the Roman legionnaires were able to ride for centuries. | |
